IRL Scoop FeRFA Award for ‘Large Industrial Project of the Year’

IRL chose this installation as Project of the Year as one it is particularly proud of due to the precision of the Floor Markings in the Main Hangar of the Air Base. Markings needed to be clear and precise in order for the aircraft to be manouvred and directed into exact locations. The technical application of the products and maintaining quality standards in a strict and demanding environment.
It also showcases the importance of selecting the correct specification for the site and how it is to be used; uses skilled operatives that are able to install resin flooring systems due to upskilling and investment, and satisfies the client by delivering a project on-time to save money and downtime whilst working in a sustainable and responsible way.
Checks were made to ensure that the Client was maintaining continuity on the project, this was achieved with the EpoxyFlex PH as it has a good resistance to fuel, oil and lubricants. For Skydrol Hydraulic Fluid spills it offers short term spillage protection and if this is spilt on the floor it can be easily cleaned up if in a timely manner in line with good housekeeping.
The scope of the work was to prepare and apply a Resin Flooring system with associated demarcation lines to an area of 8300m2. In addition, the specification was to colour-match the existing demarcation colours as installed in the HAS Buildings. The High Build Epoxy (FeRFA Type 3) system was chosen for its suitability for use within an aerospace environment, particularly hangar flooring. The professional installation was none shedding and did not cause concerns in FOD areas of operation.
The biggest challenge for IRL was completing the demarcation of the hangar floor to the exacting standard to enable the aircraft to be directed in correctly and undertaking works within the confines of an operational RAF Base. This also had to fall within the tight security and admission to and from site.

For large areas such as a military hangar, resin flooring is the best option to achieve a FOD free, chemical and abrasion resistant finish that has minimal joints and is easy to clean and maintain.

The Hangar Floor and associated rooms were successfully handed over to the client complete with all the operation and maintenance manuals and a strict inspection and test plan, which was used for quality purposes.

IRL Have again this year maintained the SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) accreditation for both CHAS and SafeContractor. In 2019 Safe Contractors key focus was to support their clients to be more than simply compliant. They build their solutions far beyond simple box ticking exercises, instead embracing new and evolving technology that will support clients to keep their workforce safe. That’s genuine added value, and real lives being saved.

It is IRL’s policy to encourage all employees to train further, and the company supports them both financially and practically to develop their career with IRL. Recent training completed by IRL staff includes First Aid, Asbestos Awareness, SSSTS, SMSTS, Manual Handling and, of course, FeRFA NVQ Level 2 in Insitu Flooring.

IRL recognises the importance of keeping employees informed on new legislation and also keeping them fully trained, it is for this reason that we hold training days regularly each year where we block the diary and focus solely on training.

This project best highlights not only our skills in providing precision line marking but also the ability to prioritise our resources in order to meet the Clients deadline. This has always been our ethos and is clearly one of the reasons our Clients come back to us time after time.  The full case study can be viewed here.

In the testimonial from the Client they commented that It had been a pleasure working with Colin on this project, throughout the project IRL employees displayed a high level of experience, dedication and commitment to quality.  The project ran smoothly despite working on a highly secure site.
