When Thwaites Star Brewery of Blackburn, discovered that the Roof of the Bottling Hall was leaking, they approached 4 different contractors who all offered different solutions to the problem. The main criteria for the solution chosen were that the roof treatment must be carried out with the minimum disruption to the production process and the work should be completed in the shortest time possible to prevent any risk caused by the water ingress.
IRL Group offered a solution in the form of Kemperol V210 a product proven over 40 years in the UK and supplied by Kemper System Limited of Warrington. The cold applied, fleece reinforced, waterproofing system is applied ‘wet on wet’ onto a pre primed surface and cures in situ to form a flexible tough continuous membrane. ‘We chose this system following our experience in other contracts and we were able to convince the customer of its suitability over the other systems offered’, said Stewart Jones of IRL.
The roof area to be treated was approximately 385 square metres which was pressure washed to clean the existing Mineral Felt surface and, after allowing it to dry, a coat of Solvent Free Polurethane Kempertec D Primer was applied by IRL’s trained and approved Contractors to the entire area and allowed to cure. The Kemperol V210 was then applied ‘wet on wet’ using AP fleece reinforcement. This system came with a 10 year materials warranty backed by Kemper System Ltd.
The project involved the flat roof area, gutters, several roof penetrations and sealing around rooflight details all of which were completed in one week. The complexity of the roof made it ideal for the Kemperol V210 cold applied liquid waterproofing system which also allowed for some new outlets to be formed in addition to the main contract so that the whole area is now protected by one continuous roof membrane, to the delight of Mr Denzil Roberts the company’s Maintenance Manager.
